cal|trop or cal|trap «KAL truhp», noun.
Now often caltrops.
1. any one of various plants having pointed, spiny flower heads or fruit; a) = star thistle. (Cf.star thistle) b) any plant of various herbs of South Europe having spiny seeds. c) = water chestnut or water caltrop. (Cf.water chestnut)
2. a defensive device against cavalry, consisting of an iron ball with four projecting spikes so arranged that when any three rest on the ground the fourth points upward; crowfoot or crow's-foot.
[probably < Old North French calketrape < Medieval Latin calcatrippa a plant that entangles the feet < Latin calcā- step on (< calcāre < calx, calcis heel) + Old High German trapo trap, noose]
